Museum Expansion

A hint at what the new Museum will look like

Coming: 2018

The Museum will close as of July 31, 2017 and re-open in September 2018 as the Museum of Surrey. While the facility will be closed, the Museum will remain active in your community through extension exhibits, school programs, the Portable Kids Explore Zone and more. Each will be a foreshadowing of what people can expect from the new Museum.

The closure will result in a Museum expansion that will be constructed efficiently in less time with substantial cost savings. Read the Corporate Report.

"The expanded museum will be a community hub where people can not only tour the museum galleries but also gather with friends, study or relax with indoor/outdoor seating and amenities. It will be a dynamic space reflecting the innovation and creativity that defines the City of Surrey." - Lynn Saffery, Museum Manager

About the Museum Expansion

The expanded museum will be a community hub where people can not only tour the Museum galleries but also gather with friends, study or relax with indoor/outdoor seating and amenities. It will be a dynamic space reflecting the innovation and creativity that defines the City of Surrey, including:

  • A flexible gallery for international and national exhibitions
  • Gallery space for community curated exhibits and celebrations
  • Large public spaces for special events and evening rentals
  • An Indigenous Hall
  • A Kids Explore Zone that will be tripled in size
  • Makerspaces to keep the creativity flowing

Functional upgrades will be made as well, including an expanded collections storage to store and document Surrey’s material collections, a fabrication workshop and humidity and climate controls to best preserve artifacts. The large atrium and moving walls planned are intended to encourage museum goers and the community alike to use the space for their leisure.

Connecting People, Communities and Stories

We will re-open in September 2018 as the Museum of Surrey. It is a subtle name change with dynamic meaning.  The Museum of Surrey will be a place where people share their stories and culture. Where they play, laugh and explore. It will be a place where people visit often to see and experience new things each time. It will be a place of immense civic pride - THE place to be in Surrey.

What Is a People Musuem?

Imagine a renewed Museum filled with life. In this case, it will be filled with the lives of Surrey. The Museum of Surrey will be your Museum. It will be a place where people can:

  • Create, share and connect with each other.
  • Contribute their own ideas, opinions - even their own objects.
  • Do things. A town square. It’s a hub of activity.
