Adult & Young Adult Programs
Engaging with Artists
To encourage interaction between artists and the public, the Surrey Art Gallery has developed a series of programs that facilitate discussions with artists and offer opportunities for the public to engage with artists and their creative processes.
Artists on Art
The Gallery considers artists as primary sources of interpretation of contemporary art. Members of the public can hear directly from and dialogue with, exhibiting artists at lectures, roundtables and presentations on current exhibitions. Artists also give technical demonstrations and lead public tours of their exhibitions.
Artists in Residence
Residencies offer selected artists opportunities to develop creative projects in the Gallery’s TechLab or one of the Gallery’s studio classrooms. Residencies may be educationally focused, intended for the public to be able to gain an understanding of the artist’s working process, or they may be focused on research and production, intended for the artist to create new work. In both cases, opportunities are made available for public access to the artist and their current work.
The public is invited to meet and speak directly with visiting artists about their work and practice at exhibition opening receptions. Receptions are often preceded by a talk or tour from the exhibiting artist(s). All are welcome.
Thursday Artist Talks
Engaging with Exhibitions
Offered in addition to talks and tours by exhibiting artists, lectures by guest speakers provide background and context for current exhibitions or address issues raised by exhibition content.
inFlux events are nights of art action specifically targeted for youth, young adults, and adults. Occurring seasonally in conjunction with our major exhibitions, these multimedia art parties include performance, socializing, and DIY art-making. Celebrating some of the best of local talent, this event’s reputation is growing as Surrey’s social hub for checking out and creating art with friends.
Guided Exhibition Tours encourage personal discovery and learning about contemporary art through conversation and the presentation of ideas related to the exhibits. All tours are interactive and tailored to the needs and interests of the visiting group. Tours are by appointment and are led by volunteer docents or by Gallery staff.
