Newton Safety Unit
The Newton Safety Unit is an initiative where officers who patrol the streets meet weekly to discuss files and trends, and come up with action plans to address issues in Newton Town Centre. Newton Safety Unit Officers are made up of members from Surrey RCMP, the City of Surrey Bylaws, Community Safety Patrol, Surrey Crime Prevention and other community stakeholders.
The initiative launched in January 2016 and aims to improve communication, and effectiveness in addressing street disorder and crime within the Newton Town Centre.
“It has been an amazing success since the beginning of January. We’re engaging from the street curb to inside the business.” Newton Business Improvement Association Executive Director Philip Aguirre
The Newton Safety Unit shares information about hot spots, prolific offenders and other concerns during a weekly meeting at the Newton BIA. Through this improved collaboration, the Unit can proactively flag individuals causing repeated disturbance, and assist RCMP and other officials with addressing ongoing issues.
Contact Newton BIA for sponsorship or volunteer opportunities, such as neighbourhood clean-ups and other neighbourhood safety events.
How we’ll measure success
- Reduction in number of break and enter incidents in the target area (per annum)
- Reduction in number of shoplifting incidents in the target area
- Reduction in total number of calls for service and street disorder incidents
