Surrey, BC – The Salmon Habitat Restoration Program (SHaRP) is celebrating Surrey’s commitment to environmental stewardship with the second annual Robson Park Festival on Saturday, August 12, 11am – 2pm. Robson Park is home to Robson Creek, which is a protected natural salmon habitat.

“My family and I have been coming to Robson Park for many years. I played football here and my kids played soccer and baseball. I am very appreciative of the all the hard work and improvements that have been done in recent years to protect Robson Creek and the park’s natural areas,” said Surrey City Councillor Mike Starchuk, Chair of the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee. “The Robson Park Festival is an opportunity to bring the community together to learn about the importance of preserving our streams and green spaces, and to celebrate our City’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.”

Festival attendees will learn about the importance of salmon habitats through a variety of salmon-themed activities and crafts. Also included are a free BBQ lunch, cotton candy, popcorn, and bouncy castle, as well as a hands-on invasive plant removal led by the SHaRP team. Removing invasive plant species such as Himalayan blackberry, English ivy, and morning glory, helps to maintain the park’s diverse natural habitat.

The festival is part of the Robson Park Stewardship Series, which will continue into the fall with Planting Parties, where community members can help plant native species, such as salmonberry and thimbleberry, to increase biodiversity and prevent invasive plant species from re-establishing.

SHaRP is a student-based initiative that promotes watershed stewardship and salmon habitat enhancement in Surrey. For over 20 years, SHaRP has employed post-secondary and high school students through the summer and fall months to protect and improve the quality of Surrey’s natural environment.
